Project Description

The City of Washougal received federal funding for design funds for the 32nd Street Widening - Middle Project.    The nature of the project is to widen the existing 32nd Street corridor from Webster Lane to W Street to allow for safer pedestrian and bicycle traffic.  The project includes pedestrian crossing improvements, intersection improvements, ADA curb ramp replacement, retaining walls, guardrail, streetlights, curb & gutter, sidewalk, and pavement widening.  The corridor currently includes sidewalk on portions of the corridor and no designated bike lanes, in which the project will improve safety for all users on the road. The project contains 2 distinct sections of varying levels of improvements as described below.

The first section of the corridor, 32nd Street (Webster Lane to J Street) currently exists with a 44' paved width and detached/attached sidewalks on each side. The proposed improvements throughout this section are to apply a slurry seal over the existing paved width and to re-stripe the section to include two 11' wide travel lanes, one 12' wide center turn lane, and two 5' bike lanes. This section also includes ADA ramp upgrades with bulb outs to help increase pedestrian safety and traffic calming with multiple schools located to the east.

The second section of the corridor, 32nd Street (J Street to W Street) exists with a 24' paved width and a short stretch of detached sidewalk on the east side. The proposed improvements throughout this section are to widen the paved width by approximately 12' on each side, apply a slurry seal to the existing paved width, and to construct sidewalks on both sides. New curb, gutter, and stormwater infrastructure will be added to comply with stormwater management requirements. This section of the corridor will require retaining walls in some locations.  The corridor will be striped to provide two 12' wide travel lanes, one 12' center turn lane, and two 6' wide bike lanes.
