Senior Social Engagement Supports

Pierce County Human Services (PCHS) is seeking proposals from eligible and qualified organizations to provide free, individually tailored services, that support the emotional well-being and mental health of socially isolated older adults who are unable to access traditional venues for social engagement in Pierce County.

Background

The Covid Pandemic brought to the forefront the disproportionate impact of social isolation and loneliness on older adults. Those living in long-term care communities found themselves confined to their rooms, unable to receive anything more than “window visits” from loved ones.  For those living alone in the community, the impact was compounded.

Social isolation is characterized by having few social relationships, social roles, group memberships, and infrequent social interaction. Older adults are at higher risk for social isolation and loneliness due to changes in health and social connections that can come with growing older, hearing, vision, and memory loss, disability, trouble getting around, and/or the loss of family and friends.

A 2020 article by Dr. Thomas K.M. Cudjoe, et al. found that 25% of adults 65 years of age and older are socially isolated. Studies conducted pre-pandemic found that more than 40% of older adults experienced loneliness. These two factors have been shown to have a significant impact on the mental and emotional health of individuals. Loneliness is associated with higher rates of clinically significant depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation, as well as with increased risk of hospitalization and emergency room visits.

Social isolation has been linked to a nearly 50% increase in the risk of developing dementia.

Looking forward, development of programs that can reach and support older adults who lack supportive social networks, and who are unable to access traditional service settings such as congregate meal sites and senior centers, will be key to supporting the emotional well-being of older adults in our communities.
